Mysore University bars movement of women students after 6pm; no restrictions for men

Mysuru: A day after an MBA student was gangraped in Mysuru, The University of Mysore on Friday imposed curbs on the movement of girl students on the Manasagangotri campus after 6 pm. However,  no restrictions have been placed on male students.

The university has also barred people from entering Kukkarahalli Lake premises after 6 pm as a precautionary measure.

” It is prohibited for females to sit alone after 6.30 pm in the Mansa Gangothri premises. Security personnel will also be deployed for patrolling every day between 6 to 9 pm,” the circular issued by the Registrar read. The order applies to Manasa Gangothri, the PG campus of the university, as well. It houses 85 PG departments, 3 women’s hostels and a men’s hostel.

As the order sparked outrage,  Vice-chancellor Prof G Hemantha Kumar said that the intention of the order was to prevent the movement of female students at lonely places on campus. The movement was banned to prevent such crimes as the Kukkarahalli lake premises has thick vegetation, which resembles a forest.

He further said that girl students instead of going alone by themselves should go along with their friends. Also, the wording of the message was what had gone wrong and that it will be “rectified”.
