Mysuru: The 140-year-old NTMS school building was demolished in the dead of the night on Monday. Those who came to protest the demolition were arrested by the police.
The NTMS Kannada School building was embroiled in controversy when in 2008 the state government granted the land worth Rs 300 Crore was donated to Ramakrishna Ashram in Mysuru. The organization plans to build a statue of Swami Vivekananda and a Mandir at the place where the school once stood.
Ironically, New Type Middle School (NTMS) was established on the Narayanashastri Road by Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar who had been inspired by Swamy Vivekananda’s call for using education as a tool for upliftment of the poor.
For more than a decade, a group of academicians, historians, and social activists have been opposing the move by the State government and Ramakrishna Ashram. Three years ago, NTMS Kannada School was shifted to the Maharani Government Teacher Training Center building.
