NMPT gets mechanized coal handling facility through PPP model

Panambur: The new mechanized coal handling terminal built at a cost of Rs 469.46 crore at the New Mangalore port here was inaugurated by Gopal Krishna, shipping secretary in the union government, on Wednesday May 22.

Through the new terminal the cargo handling capacity of the port gets substantially increased and incidentally set a new milestone in the history of New Mangalore Port Trust. Speaking on the occasion Gopal Krishna expressed the hope that henceforth the income of the port trust will register improvement in its revenues.

Public-private partnership

“The new terminal will contribute to the progress of the coastal area here. The government has confidence in the usefulness of private-public partnership and is committed to achieve upgradation of ports,” said Mr Krishna and added that the new terminal has been built under public-private partnership and with this the cargo handling capacity of the port will reach 6.73 million metric tonnes.

New Mangalore Port Trust Chairperson M Beena, and chief executive director of Chettinad Mangalore Coal Terminal Pvt Ltd, M A M R Muttaiah, were present. The project has been executed by Chettinad Mangalore Coal Terminal Pvt Ltd.
