No fresh applications under Shaadi Bhagya scheme: govt

Bengaluru: The state government has in an order issued on Saturday directed the minority welfare department to stop receiving applications under the Shaadi Bhagya scheme with immediate effect.

As per the order, the department has been directed to submit details of the pending applications under the scheme by Monday evening.

Notably, no budgetary allocation has been made for the scheme in the state budget for the fiscal year 2020-21, which was presented by chief minister BS Yediyurappa.

Shaadi Bhagya (formally called Bidaai) scheme, introduced by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the year 2013, provides Rs 50,000 financial assistance to women from Muslim, Christian, Jain, Buddhist and Parsi communities for marriage.

However, according to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Bhimappa G. Gadada, president, Uttara Kannada Horata Samiti, 28,540 of the over 1.10 lakh applications received since the scheme’s inception are pending.
