Operation to evict street vendors; protest

Mangaluru: The city corporation continued its operation of evicting street vendors on Wednesday. When the corporation came forward to evict street vendors doing business along the Lady Goshen road, the merchants resisted the move and also conducted a protest.

The corporation operation is being conducted since the last two days within the city limits. In the morning, the corporation officials are conducting the operation under the protection of the police. On Tuesday, the operation was conducted at State Bank and Central Market limits and on Wednesday it was conducted in front of Lady Goshen hospital.

The street vendors conducted an on the spot protest opposing the all of a sudden operation of the Mangaluru City Corporation. The merchants protested by laying down in front of the lorries that had come to carry out the operation. The protest was conducted under the leadership of DK district street vendors association.

A protestor B K Imtiyaz spoke with “Udayavani” on the occasion and said, “It is beyond the limits of the law to evict street vendors without conducting the Town Planning Committee meeting.  The corporation officials must think minutely about this,” he said.

“MCC will continue its operation to evict street vendors who are causing problem to the public through their method of business.  After evicting the merchants and clearing the area, the police department should see that no opportunity is provided here for the merchants later,” said Mohammed Nazeer, MCC commissioner
