Oscar 2020 nominations: The biggest snubs and surprises

The nominations for the prestigious Academy Awards 2020 were announced on Monday, January 13. Films like, 'Joker' and '1917' lead the nominations list along with Martin Scorsese's film 'The Irishman.' Let's look at some of the snubs and surprises from the Nominations for this year's Oscars. Snubs:  1. Greta Gerwig, "Little Women" (Best Director)

The Jury has not nominated any female directors this year. Even though Greta Gerwig is nominated for the best-adapted screenplay category, she was not nominated under the Best director category. 2. Jennifer Lopez, "Hustlers" (Best Supporting Actress)

Jennifer portrayed a commanding role of a ringleader of a group of former strippers who steal millions from rich men. This performance garnered her a Golden Globe nomination but was not nominated by the Academy. 3. Frozen 2 ( Best Animated Feature)

Frozen 2 is a sequel of Disney's biggest animated hit and lost out nominations to lesser-known cartoons like "I Lost My Body" and "Klaus." 4. Jamie Foxx "Just Mercy" (Best Supporting Actor)

Jamie Foxx had been getting major acclaim for his work in "Just Mercy," however, was not nominated by the Academy. 5. "Dolemite Is My Name" (Best Costume Design)

Legendary costume designer Ruth Carter was not nominated for Netflix movie, despite winning Oscars in this category last year for her work on "Black Panther." She was also the first African American to win the award. 6. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (Best Original Song)

For the song "Spirit," that she wrote and performed, Beyoncé was widely expected to earn a nomination. However, Academy passed on this song. 7. "Uncut Gems" 

Lead actor Adam Sandler and directors Benny and Josh Safdie have won multiple critics prizes for the movie. However, Academy seemed unimpressed. 8. Awkwafina, "The Farewell" (Best Actress)

Nora Lum, better known as Awkwafina was left out of contention, despite winning the best actor award in a movie of comedy in Golden Globes for her performance. 9. Robert De Niro "The Irishman" (Best Actor)

He may be the title character in Martin Scorsese's true-life crime epic, but the acclaimed actor failed to land one of the film's 10 nominations. Surprises:  Let's look at some of the nominations that surprised us. 1. "Parasite"

This movie managed to receive 6 nominations by the jury and director Bong Joon Ho's film became the first South Korean film to receive a nomination. 2. Kathy Bates, "Richard Jewell" (Best Supporting Actress)

In Clint Eastwood's film about the Atlanta Bombing investigation, Kathey Bates turned in a stellar emotional performance as Richard Jewell's mother was a surprise nomination. 3. "Klaus" (Best Animated Feature)

Knocking Disney's well-known animated movie, "Frozen 2" out of the race Netflix bagged animated feature nomination with "Klaus." 4. John Williams (Best Original Score)

The composer landed his record 52nd nomination for his work on "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." 5. "The Lighthouse" (Best Cinematography)

This Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe black and white indie movie landed just a single nomination for Jarin Blaschke's cinematography.
