Over speeding: FIR against vehicles driving above 130 kmph in Karnataka from Aug 1

Ramanagara: Starting August 1, any vehicle exceeding the speed limit of 130 km/h on any road in the state will be subject to a case being registered. This offense could result in a fine of up to Rs 2,000 or six months of imprisonment.

Traffic police will not identify overspeeding vehicles solely through traffic interceptors. Instead, both spot and sectional measurements will be used to detect and register cases of overspeeding.

The problem of overspeeding on the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway has been a significant concern for the police, leading to numerous accidents. While fines have been imposed, some drivers slow down only when they spot a camera and then speed up again afterward. Therefore, the police have now devised a strategy to curb this behavior.

To control overspeeding, any vehicle driving over 130 km/h will be considered reckless and negligent, and an FIR will be registered against the vehicle owner starting August 1.

What are Spot and Sectional Measurements?

Spot measurement involves measuring the speed of a vehicle at a specific moment using a camera. Sectional measurement calculates the speed by determining how long a vehicle takes to travel from one point to another. This new strategy aims to prevent drivers from slowing down only when they spot a camera and then speeding up afterward.

“Approximately 90% of accidents occur due to overspeeding. To curb this, FIRs will be registered against vehicles exceeding 130 km/h from August 1. Vehicle speeds will be measured using both spot speed and sectional speed methods,” said Alok Kumar, ADGP, Traffic and Road Safety Division.
