The residents of the village existed under an overbearing cloud of fear with the leopard on the prowl at residential areas here during the night. The wild cat had also taken prey a few domestic animals here only to heighten the fear of the people.
Based on the complaint given by the villagers and eyewitness, Kaup sub-division forest officer Nagesh Billava and staff inspected the location and also set a trap for the feline on July 11.
On Saturday, the leopard in search of a prey found food laid as bait by the department and unwittingly attempted to consume it only to get ensnared in the trap. Immediately after getting information of the incident, forest officer Nagesh Billava and staff rushed to the spot, shifted the irate wild cat to Udupi and released it into the forest.
