Police begin crackdown on speeding with mobile speed detection radar guns

In a bid to curb accidents, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification setting vehicle speed limits. Following this, police have commenced operations using “Mobile Speed Detection Radar Guns” to monitor and enforce these limits.

Several cases have already been registered, and fines have been imposed on violators. Currently, the operations are primarily focused on highways within the district, while speed limits within Mangalore city roads are yet to be decided. Police have installed boards at certain locations on highways where they are actively monitoring vehicle speeds.

Strict Penalties for Speeding
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) B.P. Dinesh Kumar, no highway within the district allows a speed limit of 100 km/h. The maximum speed limit is 80 km/h, with some areas having limits as low as 50 km/h or 30 km/h. Vehicles exceeding these limits are being fined.

District Police Superintendent Yathish N. told Udayavani that operations are yet to begin in municipal and rural areas. Currently, efforts are focused on highways where fines are being imposed to raise public awareness about speed limits.

Special Operation by Mangaluru Police
In Mangalore, the city police conducted a special operation on Thursday against various traffic violations, including wrong-way driving on one-way streets, defective number plates, speeding, and overloading of auto-rickshaws. The operation was led by Traffic Division ACP Najma Farooqui and involved officers and staff from various traffic stations.Operations were conducted at night in some areas. Violators of one-way traffic were fined and warned.

Police instructed drivers with defective number plates to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP).

The ongoing efforts by the police aim to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
