The Civil Services Examination (CSE) stands as one amongst the toughest examinations in the country. The year-long examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and many people find it hard to pass this exam. However, a youth who once worked in a shoe shop to earn his livelihood secured the sixth rank in the UPSC exam 2018 and set an example to other IAS aspirants.

IAS officer Shubham Gupta, who once worked in a shoe shop to earn his livelihood secured the sixth rank in the UPSC exam 2018, is currently a collector in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

Shubham born in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan has studied up to the seventh standard from here. Due to financial troubles, his family moved to a small village in Maharashtra. There was not a single Hindi or English medium school in the village and it was difficult for Shubham to study in Marathi.

Later his father got him admitted to a school in Vapi, Gujarat from there he completed his studies, from 8th to 12th. As the school was far away from home, he used to go to school with his sister by train. For this, he had to catch the train at 6 in the morning and could come back home only after 3 o’clock.

Gupta’s father had opened a shoe shop near Dhanu Road in Maharashtra so that he can run the household. After finishing his schooling in Vapi, Shubham started working at his father’s shop, however, due to this, his studies were never affected.

After 12th, Shubham Gupta came to Delhi and completed his B.Com and M.Com, from Delhi University.

Later he started preparing for UPSC in the year 2015, but could not succeed in the first attempt. In the year 2016, Shubham Gupta gave the second try and secured 366th rank by clearing prelims, mains and interviews. After this, he was selected for the Indian Audit and Accounts Service.

Even after getting a government job, Shubham Gupta continued to prepare for the UPSC exam. Tried again in 2017, but this time he could not clear the prelims exam. In the year 2018, he attempted for the fourth time and secured All India Rank 6 and then he got Maharashtra cadre.

Soon Shubham made headlines by getting Wi-Fi installed in all schools of Parola taluka of Jalgaon district, to run online classes properly.

Recently, his tweet informed that this work has now been completed and 113 schools have got Wi-Fi connection. After this, he was highly praised on social media. In one of his tweets, he had said,

“During the BDO charge, I had decided to install Wi-Fi connections in all government schools. Unfortunately, it was not completed on my time. I have received these pictures from the education officer sometime back and have been told that the work is done. This is really heart-wrenching,” his tweet read.
