Dabur Ltd is an Indian multinational consumer goods company. It manufactures Ayurvedic medicine and natural consumer products and is one of the largest fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies in India.

Set up in 1884 by Dr S K Burman as a proprietary firm for the manufacture of Ayurvedic drugs, the Company was incorporated later by his descendants in the name of Dabur (Dr S K Burman) Pvt. Ltd.

Dr. S. K. Burman was an Ayurvedic practitioner in Kolkata, he formulated Ayurvedic medicines for diseases like cholera, constipation and malaria.

He launched his mission to make health care products in Calcutta in 1884 and in 1896, with growing popularity of Dabur products, Dr. Burman expands his operations by setting up a manufacturing plant for mass production of formulations.

In order to develop scientific processes and quality checks for the mass production of traditional Ayurvedic medicines Burman established research laboratories in 1919.

Later in 1920, Dabur expands further with new manufacturing units at Narendrapur and Daburgram. The distribution of Dabur products spreads to Bihar and the North-East.

In 1936, Dabur becomes a full-fledged company and in 1972 the company shifts operations to Delhi.

The Company was incorporated on 16th September, 1975 for the manufacture of high grade edible & industrial guargum powder and its sophisticated derivatives. It was incorporated in the name of Vishal Chemical (India) Ltd.

In the year 1979, they set Dabur Research Foundation and in 1986 the company was converted into a public limited company.

In 1988, they launched pharmaceutical medicines. In the year 1989, the company converted the Ayurvedic digestive formulation into a children’s fun product with the launch of Hajmola Candy.

Later, in 1993, they developed Dab 10 an intermediate for anti-cancer drug namely Taxol.

For better operation and management, 3 separate divisions were created in 1996 according to their product mix,  Health Care, Products Division, Family Product Division & Dabur Ayurvedic Specialities Limited.

With changing demands of business and to inculcate a spirit of corporate governance, the Burman family inducts professionals to manage the company in 1998. For the first time in the history of Dabur, a non family professional CEO sits at the helm of the company.

Although, Dabur India Ltd is one of India’s oldest companies manufacturing Ayurvedic remedies, Ayurveda wasn’t at the core of its marketing strategy.

The company had embarked on diversifying its original business through the production of non-Ayurvedic products.

However, as the brand Patanjali entered into the market, Dabur was forced to do a U-turn and rebuild its image as India’s first Ayurvedic company.

Dabur India Ltd. made its beginnings with a small pharmacy, but has continued to learn and grow to a commanding status in the industry.

The Company has gone a long way in popularizing and making easily available a whole range of products based on the traditional science of Ayurvedic.
