Udupi: The much-awaited demand of residents of Udupi will finally become a reality with the state cabinet approving the proposal for up-gradation of the district hospital here into a 250-bed facility.

The project cost for up-gradation of the hospital, originally constructed in the year 1961 has been estimated at Rs 115 crore. Apart from the renovation and providing other facilities, the plan also envisages to fill the vacant positions in the hospital, informed District Surgeon Dr. Madhusudan Nayak.

The appointment of four more specialist doctors, two surgeons, an anaesthetist, an orthopaedist, dermatologist, ENT surgeon, psychiatrist, radiologist, six general duty medical officers, 25 nurses, and junior lab technicians is on the cards.

Since 2001, MLA Raghupati Bhat had been striving to get the consent for up-gradation of the hospital and the proposal had been twice rejected in the past, said Raghavendra Kini, Chief of Urban Development Authority.
