Pointing out that the existing fish market is convenient to both customers and vendors, the protestors demanded that priority should also be given to the construction of fish market under the smart city project. Hundreds of fisherwomen took part in the protest holding placards.

The fish vending fisherwomen’s association’s legal advisor S P Chengappa addressed the protestors and said, “Though there are over 1,000 women have been leading their lives through fish vending, no proper fish market has been constructed so far. Even the existing fish market lacks basic facilities. Though Mangaluru has been listed under smart city project, no work has been undertaken under the scheme so far. Priority should be given to the construction of a fully-fledged fish market under the smart city project at the earliest,” he demanded.

Mr Chengappa condemned both the state and central government for their anti-people governance and said,” Mangaluru is known for fishing activities and the fishermen contribute much to the growth of tout economy. However, the demands of the fishermen have always been ignored. If no measures are taken to construct a fully-fledged fish market, the protest will be intensified in the coming days,” he warned.
