Earlier, some local Congress members had expressed anger over the party’s decision to offer the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha seat to coalition partner JD(S) and staged a protest on Thursday March 14th. During the protest, they had burnt tyres in front of the party office.

A suo moto case was registered against the Congress leaders on Friday by the Udupi police for staging a flash protest without permission, burining or tyres and for causing public nuisance by blocking the way outside Congress office.

Udupi district Youth Congress president Vishwas Amin, district Congress vice-president Prakhyat Shetty, Yatish Karkera, Imran and others had been part of the protest.

Since Congress offered the Udup-Chikmagalur seat to JD(S), the district Congress has been up in arms against the party’s decision. Udupi Congress maintains that JD(S) does not have enough presence in the constituency and that Congress has a far better chance of winning here. The party’s decision also attracted a resignation threat from AICC member Amrith Shenoy.
