They added that astronauts’ average daily radiation dose on the Moon would be about 2.6 times higher than the International Space Station crew’s daily dose.

The measurements were taken by the Chinese lunar lander Chang’e-4, which landed on the far side of the moon on January 3, 2019. The result is an indicator of how much protective shielding future astronauts will need.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.
