The 66-year-old, also known as ‘Lone Wolf’ was barely known outside of China until this year. Having dropped out of primary school, during the chaos of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in China, Zhong worked as a construction worker, a newspaper reporter, drugmaker and beverage sales agent before setting up his own business.
According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Zhong is currently the 11th richest person in the world after his net worth soared to $77.8 billion from $70.9 billion this year. It’s one of the fastest accumulations of wealth in history.
Zhong’s fortunes surged after he took vaccine maker Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise Co. public in April 2020, then months later Nongfu Spring Co., a maker of bottled water, became one of Hong Kong’s hottest listings.
