Sea water is turning green: Fishermen’s fear, tourists’ curiosity

Kaup/Padubidri/Malpe: Since the last couple of days, the sea water near Kaup, Padubidri and Malpe has turned green and this has caused much fear amongst the fishermen.

The sea water has turned green at Ucchila, Yermal, Padubidri areas and is also emitting foul smell. If this has become a cause for terror amongst the fishermen, it has also become ignited curiosity amongst the tourists. The green colour of the water is similar to green moss and due to this fact, the tourists’ are hesitant to venture into the waters.

Green colour due to algae

In the monsoon season, the algae on the rocks falls into the sea water due to which the colour of the water turns green. Earlier too, similar incidents have occurred. Since the last couple of days, the sea is showing these signs. Or else, the water might have become so due to a rule of the nature, says Prashanth Karkera, beach cleanliness supervisor.

Problem for fishing

Since the sea water has turned green, it is causing difficulty in fishing. Since the algae is getting stuck to the net it the fishes are not getting into the nets. It is becoming difficult to do fishing. If this continues, the fishermen do not know what to do, says Ramesh Kotiyan, a fisherman.

Scientific research necessary

I have been doing charmuri business at the beach since many years. Hence, since a long time I have not seen the sea water turn green. I cannot understand if this is natural or not. It would be better f a scientific research is carried, says Krishna.
