Bengaluru: The option of surrendering one’s seat after admission to a private college offering professional courses will be ended soon by the state government from 2020-21 academic year.

The move is intended to stop the practice of seat-blocking: students giving up their seats in a college after the mop-up round; the seat then goes back to the college’s account.

An expert committee has also submitted a detailed report to the state government a few weeks ago recommending eliminating the option of seat surrendering after the mop-up round and penalising students with a hefty fine if they do so.

Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Medical Education said that the government will approve the report and its recommendations.

The seat-blocking scam got exposed some months ago after I-T officials conducted raids on a few private medical colleges.
