Separate state is never a solution, says CM Siddaramaiah addressing development & disparity concerns in North Karnataka

Belagavi: In a significant address in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to North Karnataka’s progress. He also expressed concerns about demands for a separate state, citing their counterproductive nature and propensity to create disparity rather than address developmental issues.

Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for the supplementary estimates in the State Legislature, the CM assured that a high-powered committee, led by eminent economists will be formed and tasked with studying the conditions prevalent in the backward taluks (administrative divisions) of the state.

“Pressuring for a separate Karnataka worsens integration, it’s disrespectful to those who sacrificed their lives,” the CM expressed, underscoring the historical significance of unity in the region. He acknowledged the efforts of numerous influential figures who fought for integration, including during the linguistic reorganization.

Reflecting on his prior engagements, the CM recalled dedicating extensive time during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2014 and 2017 to discussions centered around North Karnataka’s development.

Providing insights into the financial allocations for development initiatives, the CM outlined the utilization of grants in Kittur Karnataka, encompassing both backward and extremely backward taluks. “The allocated grants for development must be fully utilized. Grants have been allocated for five taluks in Kittur Karnataka, including the most backward ones. From 2013-14 till now, 14,877.36 crore has been sanctioned for Kittur Karnataka, of which 10,280 crore has been released, and 8,330 crore has been utilized. An additional 5,000 crore will be allocated from the next year for Kittur Karnataka. Mumbai Karnataka’s remaining backward taluks will also receive grants,” he informed.

The CM emphasized the government’s readiness to form a committee aimed at obtaining central government grants and necessary clearances for state water projects. Stressing the immediate necessity of clearances from the Centre, he highlighted their role in triggering employment opportunities and project implementation.

Touching upon the hurdles faced in utilizing water resources effectively, the CM discussed delays in the execution of Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam’s plans due to various factors. He underscored the need for environmental clearances for pivotal drinking water projects, expressing readiness to commence work immediately upon receiving the required clearances.
