Sex workers in Bengaluru protest against ‘police brutalities’

Bengaluru: On March 9, around sixty sex workers in Bengaluru staged a protest before the Karnataka State Commission for Women’s office complaining against the police brutalities.

Talking about  how most women are forced to engage in sex work, Geetha; the secretary of Sadhana Mahila Sangha which is a union of sex workers, asserted, “Women enter due to various circumstances and it is not morally or legally correct to assault them or extract money from them.”

She added that they want the commission to put an end to the exploitation.

Many women have accused the cops of keeping them in police stations late into the night, physically assaulting them, and imposing false cases on them to extort money.

The police have been charged with confiscating their mobile phones, calling their families or landlords, and disturbing their personal lives.

The complaint has been accepted by Pramila Naidu chairperson of the commission and she has informed that the complaint will be forwarded to the police commissioner and the DCPs for further investigation.

To confirm the allegations, Naidu has also vowed to look into the footage from the concerned police station.
