Smart City; Plan to build greenery in the city

Mangaluru: The amount of greenery in the city is reducing every successive year and in this backdrop, a plan has been drawn to increase the greenery in the city under the Smart City initiative.

The decision was taken during a special meeting participated by various leaders at the hall in the corporation building on Wednesday. The meeting was held in the backdrop of the organizing of ‘One Smart City One impact’ programme under the leadership of Mangaluru Smart City, with the aim for the citizens to take maximum benefit from the initiative on Aug 2nd.

Speaking at the meeting, Mangalore Bishop Dr| Peter Paul Saldanha said, the green spaces in the city like Tagore Park have worn out. The number of trees must increase for the people to like the Smart City initiative. It is vital to take action for the conservation of water, absorption of rain water and prevention of soil erosion along with the rain, he pointed.

Official commitment necessary

Swami Ekagamyananda of Ramakrishna Mission said, in the backdrop of the implementation of the Smart City project, all the officials must show more commitment. It is possible to create a beautiful city if proper facilities are created by gathering suggestions from all, he advised.

CREDAI president D B Mehta said, green buildings should be created to support afforestation. The rule required for this must be created in the city. Plant saplings may be planted at empty government sites.

Plan to maintain the balance

MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said, observing the growth of the city since 2011, several tress have been destroyed. For various reasons, parks and empty spaces have been converted into commercial areas. A plan for afforestation has been created to maintain the balance of the city, he informed.
