Smooth traffic movement will be ensured by nine teams: DC

Udupi: “Nine teams have been formed to ensure that vehicles follow traffic rules. The teams will look over wearing of helmet by two-wheeler riders, seat belts in cars, no usage of mobiles while driving, rules while crossing roads, create awareness on using of public transport as far as possible, keep an eye on driving by minor children, make sure that alchometer, speed guns, interceptor, CCTV and cameras are in working condition and assign trained staff for their use. One of the nine teams will perform the duties each month,” said deputy commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati after presiding over district road safety committee meeting in DC’s office on Thursday, March 14.

“Bridges and watery areas should be inspected. Bridges should be repaired wherever necessary as per rules. Roads on national highways and rural areas should be inspected. Details of accidents should be recorded on the basis of gender and age. Make sure that school buses and three-wheelers do not transport more school children than permitted from the beginning of academic year. There is a grant of Rs 3 lakh for road safety committee. Barricades, sign boards and reflectors can be bought out of it. Inform if any arrangements are required for elections. Set an annual goal to reduce accidents on national highway and state highways,” she advised.

Speaking on the occasion, member of district road safety committee R M Varnekar said, “Ambulances should be equipped with necessary equipment and staff. Specific action should be taken to reduce accidents on accident prone zones. Scientific investigations should be held by the team of representatives from transport department, police department and PWD in cases of accidents involving critical injuries and deaths. Lead agency staff should hold training on road safety.”

Udupi district deputy SP J R Jaishanker, Kaup police station ASP Navin S Naika, education officer of the office of deputy director of public instruction Jahnavi C, district SP and district road safety committee member Nisha James, corporation president Anand Kallolikar and others were present.
