In the past few days, several healthcare workers have been attacked as they battle to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Reports have come from across of India’s health workers being attacked and, in some cases evicted from their homes by panicked residents. In a Hyderabad hospital, doctors were reportedly harassed by the family members of a Covid-19 patient who died and in Madhya Pradesh two women doctors who had gone there to identify family members of a man who died of Covid-19 were chased by a mob. We came across many cases of abuse and harassment of health care workers in Karnataka too There were attacks on Asha workers who were on their duty of inspection in several cities of the state. That is not it, Thousands who attended the gathering in Delhi, organised by Islamic group Tablighi Jamaat, have been put in quarantine, and it is said that while under quarantine in hospital, some of them were seen walking naked in the hospital ward and harassing women doctors and nurses. Well, India is under a lockdown for several days and most of them are staying home to prevent the spread of the virus. Health care professionals, policemen and government officials are working day and night to safeguard our lives. We as responsible citizens of India must cooperate with the officials who are working hard and risking their lives for our safety. Also, it is high time that the government takes strict action against those harassing the healthcare workers because if the attacks continue, it will definitely affect India’s ability to defeat Covid-19.
