Students in limbo: Mangalore University Convocation date delay sparks anxiety

In a state of apprehension, students of Mangalore University are awaiting confirmation of the convocation date, which traditionally occurs in February or March but has been delayed due to various factors, including the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Typically scheduled for December or January as per university regulations, the convocation was pushed to February/March due to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical issues. However, the recent Lok Sabha elections complicated matters further. Despite a proposed date of May 15, the convocation was once again postponed due to the implementation of the Election Code of Conduct.

One concerned student expressed frustration, stating, “I completed my graduation last year from an autonomous college in the area. The result came in July itself. I have already applied for the convocation certificate. Also got a seat in 3 universities in the UK for higher studies. However, it is not possible to go for higher education without a convocation here. I have been waiting for 1 year as the temporary certificate is not applicable there.”

The delay in convocation has significant implications for students’ future endeavors, including employment opportunities and higher education pursuits both domestically and internationally. While the university issues Provisional Degree Certificates (PDC) to mitigate immediate concerns, these certificates are not universally accepted, particularly for government jobs, certain private sector positions, and study abroad programs.

Professor P.L. Dharma, Chancellor of Mangalore University, addressed the issue, stating, “Convocation is an important phase of a student’s life. Anxiety arises from the uncertainty surrounding employment and education opportunities. While the university strives to provide provisional solutions, the absence of the convocation ceremony remains a significant concern for students and their families.”

Efforts are underway to resolve the situation, with the Governor calling a special meeting on May 4 to discuss the matter. It is expected that a request will be made to the Governor to finalize a convocation date, considering that the Lok Sabha elections have concluded in the coastal region. In the interim, students are advised to contact the university for assistance, with 6-month Provisional Degree Certificates available for urgent needs in accordance with UGC norms.
