Teacher booked for corporal punishment

Mangaluru: The headmistress of Government Higher Primary School in Ajjinadka in Bantwal has been booked after she allegedly beaten up class four children for not doing homework on Friday.

The accused teacher identified as Sharada had mercilessly beaten up all children in the class for not completing their homework, inform sources. However, only one student lodged a complaint, based on which a case has been registered at Ullal police station, said the police.

According to Childline volunteers, the incident took place when Sharada was teaching children of fourth standard who mostly belong to poor families. On finding that the student had failed to complete the homework, she started beating them with cane.

The beating mentally traumatized the victim kid who refused to enter the house after returning from school. The kid stood outside the house near a well till father came and enquired the reason. On seeing bruises all over the child’s body, the father immediately took the child to the hospital. Meanwhile, the neighbours who witnessed the injuries informed the Childline. The members of Childline requested the parents to file a complaint post which a case was registered.  

According to sources, after the first complaint was lodged, parents of four more students came forward to report the cruel act of the teacher and complaints have been filed under corporal punishment. Cases have been booked for mentally harassing children under Sections of RTE Act 2009 and The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
