Thousands of people missing since 2015: Police

Bengaluru: Of the total 51,429 who went missing in the State between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2018, as many as 13,933 people are still missing, including men, women, boys and girls.

The highest category of missing persons is of women with a total of 26,713 gone missing of which 6,280 still remain untraced.

On Monday, the State police submitted data of missing men, women, boys and girls to the High Court of Karnataka according to which 15,006 people went missing in 2015 and of them 13,142 were traced. The statistics submitted to the Court are based on the number of complaints lodged with the police about missing persons.

Likewise, 14,359 went missing in 2016 of which 11,656 of them were traced. About 14,522 people went missing in 2017 and 8,997 were traced. As many as 7,542 people went missing till June 30 in 2018 of them 3,701 have been traced. As many as 6,089 men are still missing of the total 17,696 who went missing between 2015 and 2018.

824 boys and 740 girls are still untraceable of the total 3,845 boys and 3,175 girls who went missing since 2015.

In 2018, as many as 7,542 people (2,493 men, 4,271 women, 340 boys and 438 girls) went missing and of them only 3,701 people (993 men, 2338 women, 152 boys and 213 girls) have been traced as on June 30^th. This year around 3,841 people have gone missing and remain untraced.

On July 17^th, a directed the police to submit the particulars of missing boys and girls during the hearing of a habeas corpus petition related to a missing son of a migrant labourer from Bengaluru. They pointed out three large scale problems facing the society including the plight of the migrant population, of human trafficking, and the problem of girls being sold into the flesh market.
