According to the police, the deceased, Sanjay Sathish, had become friends with Sumaya Basu at Malleswaram police station only seven days before he was killed.

On March 27, Sathish, a financier, had gone to the police station to file an complaint against a man who had cheated him. In the meantime, Sumaya was in the police station to complain about her husband who was harassing her. She got to know Sathish, who offered her an occupation as a domestic help in his home after she let him know of her monetary issues. The two exchanged their numbers in the station.

The following day, Sumaya went to meet Sathish in his apartment, along with her friend Sumati.
