Traffic along Charmadi Ghat banned for two days; landslide

Belthangady: Charmadi Ghat has witnessed landslides at various places following incessant rains since the last two days. Hence, as a precautionary measure, the Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has ordered the prohibition of traffic on the ghat for two days.

Following the landslide and uprooted trees lying across the ghat road at different locations, commuters were stuck in various places on the Charmadi Ghat, which connects Chikkamagaluru with Mangaluru. The affected areas was visited by a team made of DC Sasikant Senthil, SP Laxmiprasad, Beltangady tahsildar Ganapaty Shastry, circle inspector Sandesh P G, SI Avinash and zonal forest officer Subbaiah on the midnight of Tuesday, August 6.

While commuters stuck at various parts of the ghat, were rescued immediately, the DC observed the gravity of the situation and ordered the traffic to be closed on the ghat for two days. Thus, the road connectivity between Chikkamagaluru-Dakshina Kannada, Dharmasthala is currently cut off. Work was carried out throughout the night, by public and government personnel, working to clear the mud that has piled up at various places of the ghat. Meanwhile, Beltangady police have camped on the site.
