Trawler from Malpe sinks in Maharashtra

Malpe: A deep sea trawler from Malpe fisheries port sunk near Devgad in Maharashtra later on the night of Monday. Seven fishermen aboard the vessel were rescued.

The steel fishing boat which sunk has been identified as Shivaraksha owned by Dinesh Tingalaya from Padutonse Bengre. The rescued fishermen from Bhatkal are Sunil Manjunath, Suresh Manjunath, Jagannatha Rama, Prashanth Mudagi, Gajndra Panduranga, Krishna Mogera and Lohith Dharma.

On April 6th, the boat left on its fishing expedition from Malpe port and was carrying out fishing 42 miles fro he coast near Ratnagiri of Maharashtra when it hull was hit by something and the vessel started taking in water. The fishermen immediately contacted another nearby trawler Shiva Tejas and informed them of their predicament. Shiva Tejas rushed to the location and rescued the 7 fishermen.

An attempt was made to tow the sinking vessel with assistance from Shiva Tejas, Varasiddhi, Hanuma Nannidhya and Radhambika fishing boats. However, it is said that even as they were 34 miles from the coast of Devgad in Maharashtra, the vessel submerged completely. A total loss of Rs 90 lakh has been estimated including the 8,000 liters of diesel in the boat, fishing nets, GPS and the fish catch.
