Two more RADAR’s for sea surveillance

Panambur: Two RADAR’s will be installed at Kundapur and Belekeri with the aim to maintain an eye  on the activities on the activities on the western sea along the coast, said S S Dasila, DIG and Caommander of the defence force at a press conference.

The land acquisition process for the RADAR at Belekeri has already been completed. The RADAR at Kundapur will be installed at the light house there. The RADAR centres at Bhatkal and Surathkal are already functioning. These RADAR’s have a surveillance limits of 60 to 80 nautical miles. It is possible to keep an eye on the activity till Bhatkal from the RADAR centre in Surathkal. The RADAR’s are also fixed with quality cameras, he informed.

The ships and planes of the coast guards has kept the coast of Karnataka safe and protected. Along with keeping an eyes on illegal activities, immediate aid is also provided through its ships to fishermen in difficulty or danger at the sea.

Along with its duties, the coast guard is also doing its social responsibilities. People awareness prgrammes have been conducted through the special Swacchta Abhiyan, community conversation programme and medical camps, he said.

Several lives saved

Along with the Ockhi cyclone, the coast guard has saved 202 lives in 2017. 209 lives have been saved in 2018 and in 2019 up till now, 19 lives have been saved. Even during the excesive weather conditions of 2018, the coast guard was involved in the rescue operations along the coastal districts and save 39 lives, informed S S Dasila.

Karavali coast is safe

The karavali coast of Karnataka is safe. Even then, the coast guard is taking precaution for the protection of the sea and the safety of the fishermen. The Karnataka coast guards will be celebrating their ‘43rd Foundation Day’ on Feb 1st.
