Born in 1931 to Udupi’s Ananth and Anandi Kamath, Gopalakrishna Kamath lost his parents at the age of 9. He grew up with four older sisters and had a difficult early life.
With his efforts, he was able to finish his medical education at Kasturba Medical College.
Dr Kamath did his internship at the Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York and then worked for 25 years as a psychologist at Utica Psychiatric Center in Utica, New York.

He continued to practice till his 80s and followed a policy of treating patients with lower income. He was also a polyglot who spoke 8 languages.
Dr Kamath is survived by his wife Parimala, sons Suresh and Shivanatha.
