Shrinivas (19) son of Raju Nairy of Saligrama, had been critically injured in an accident near Uppinakote in Brahmavara taluk on the evening of April 2. He had been rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal for treatment. His prognosis was poor and he did not show any signs of recovery, despite the best efforts of the medical professionals. On April 4, Shrinivas was declared brain dead by a panel of doctors as per the protocols Human Rights Act 1994.
When the family was informed about this news, Raju Nairy expressed his willingness to donate his son’s organs. As per the wishes of the family, six organs — two kidneys, a liver, skin, and 2 corneas– were harvested. The liver was flown to Bengaluru’s Astor Hospital in Bengaluru and the rest of the organs were retained for patients registered at the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.
