Katapadi: Comedian Nagesh Kamath Katapadi and his son Pratham Kamath are proud that their dream of having a terrace garden to grow organic and healthy vegetables is being fully realised.
Both planned for it during the COVID-19-induced lockdown last year but failed in their first attempt.
They had planted vegetable plants on their farm. However, the crop failed.
Then, they learned of terrace gardening and set about 1000 square metres in their home for it.

They planted, in old plastic and cement bags, okra, ginger, pumpkins, lentils, basil, tomatoes, chillies, watermelons, cardamom, mint and other household vegetables.
Sujata Kamath, Pratham’s mother, creates organic manure through pipe compost for the plants.
To ensure that the terrace is not muddied and soiled, they have kept the plant bags on evenly placed mud roof tiles.
“We have been successful in terrace farming as we regularly followed Udyavani’s articles on farming and pipe composting. Homemade fresh, organic vegetables are good for health. We do not sell our extra harvest but share it with neighbours. My son’s love for farming has also brought satisfaction to my mind,” said Nagesh Kamath.
“Interest in vegetable farming, guidance by Udayavani’s informative articles on farming and with the support of my parents I am reaping good yields in our backyard and terrace garden. We have even arranged plants in the place where the overflowing water from the tank falls to save the water,” adds Pratham Kamath.
