In the wake of local protests over the granting of land to the mosque, MLA Raghupati Bhat had met Revenue Minister R Ashok and reported to him that the land was allegedly illegally sanctioned to the mosque.

Accordingly, on the instruction of Minister Ashok, the Udupi Deputy Commissioner submitted a report on it after which the land was notified to be returned to the government ownership on June 22.

In 2018, during the Congress government, the then Deputy Commissioner had transferred the land to the Kalmat Mosque through the Waqf Board.
