Council Commissioner Rayappa said that the per-unit cost of the bin is Rs 121 and has a 10-kilogram capacity.

“The aim of this program is to encourage residents to segregate wet waste at origin and not hand it over to waste collectors in plastic bags,” Rayappa said.

He explained that approximately 11 tonnes of wet waste and 8 tonnes of dry waste are collected every day in the town’s 31 wards.

“4 tonnes of the collected wet waste is converted into compost at a site near Kallapu while the other 7 tonnes are sent to Mangaluru City Corporation’s compost unit at Pachchanady,” he said.

Rayappa said that two more compost making units will come up at Uliya and Kallapu soon.

Recently, the town council had launched its own brand of manure called Ullal Brand made from the wet waste processed at its compost unit.
