Many women in Uttar Pradesh are waking up to the fact that they have a say in their marriages, and they aren’t afraid to use it.

Indian brides have canceled weddings in recent months because the groom was either bald, turned up inebriated, or wasn’t educated enough.

The latest in a long line of bizarre rejections came (yet again) from UP when a bride refused to marry her fiance because he failed to hire a wedding photographer.

According to reports, the daughter of a farmer from a village in Kanpur Dehat district was going to marry a man from Bhognipur. When the baraat (wedding procession) arrived, the preparations were nearly complete, with the stage fully decked for the ‘Jaimala’ ritual.

The groom arrived on stage for the garland ceremony to much hoopla from the bride’s family, only for the bride to find something was missing.

The enraged bride exited the stage and practically walked out on her groom shortly before the wedding when she realized there was no photographer to document the important day.

She was said to have gone to a neighbor’s house after leaving the venue.

Despite her family’s best efforts, the obstinate woman refused to change her mind.

“The man who did not care about our marriage today, how is he going to take care of me in the future?” she said.

Both families agreed to return the presents and money they had exchanged at the Mangalpur police station, and the problem was eventually resolved.

“Both the parties returned the goods and cash given to each other. After this, the groom left for his native place without a bride,” sub-inspector Dori Lal said.

“There was a dispute over the photographer and videographer which the groom side did not arrange due to which the girl got angry and refused to marry,” he explained.
