Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan passes away

Mumbai: Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan (71) passed away due to cardiac arrest at Guru Nanak hospital in Bandra at 1.52 am early on Friday, July 3.

The 71-year-old choreographer was admitted to Guru Nanak hospital on June 17 due to breathing-related ailments and passed away due to cardiac arrest on Friday.

Born in 1948, Khan started her career as a child artist at the age of 3. Graduating to a back-up dancer in the 1950s, she worked with choreographer B Sohanlal.

She started working as a choreographer with Geeta Mera Naam (1974) and her career touched new heights while working with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit.

Saroj Khan has choreographed some memorable songs in Bollywood films Mr India (1987), Nagina (1986), Chandni (1989), Tezaab (1988), and Thanedaar (1990). She last collaborated with Madhuri Dixit again in Kalank (2018).

Saroj Khan has choreographed over 2000 songs and won National award tree times. She is also known as “The Mother of Dance/Choreography in India”

Her signature moves in songs, Ek Do Teen, Dola Re Dola, Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, Hawa Hawai, Chandni, and Tama Tamma, are remembered to this day.

She is survived by her husband B. Sohanlal, son Hamid Khan and daughters Hina Khan and Sukyna Khan.
