A village in flood-hit Kodagu adopted

Mangaluru: The Arya Vysya community families from across Karnataka under the aegis of Karnataka Arya Vysya Mahasabha will reach out to the rain battered Kodagu district by providing Rs. 2 crore as financial assistance and by adopting a village in the district.

The Mahasabha has responded to similar natural calamity in Karnataka in the past by coming to aid of flood victims in Raichur in 2009. The present destruction across Kodagu is heart-wrenching and as a community we have come forward to do our bit to help the people in need in our way, said S R Kubera Setty, director of Karnataka Arya Vysya Mahasabha and president, Karavali Sree Kanyakaparameshwari Arya Vysya Sangha.

The need of the hour is to provide immediate assistance to the affected and the Mahasabha aims to complete the task in 6 months.

Many works have been planned for the village to be adopted including repairs of houses of flood victims, re-connecting electricity supply to the village and homes with the help of the local Escom. Steps will be taken to provide aid to the children whose education has been disrupted and to make arrangements for portable drinking water.

Repair works of damaged classrooms will be done and wherever necessary, furniture, text books, notebooks and stationary items will be provided to the students, Mr. Shetty informed.

Mr. Shetty said that the plans also include making transportations arrangements to help students go to nearest school. The aid will also take care of animals and cattle. We also have drawn plans to provide basic agricultural; equipment to help people to restart their lives, he added.
