Irfan alias Mohammed Irfan (33), Syed Akbar alias Mechanic Akbar (46), Syed Siddiq Akbar (30), Akbar Basha (27), Sanaulla Sharif (28) and Sadiq UL Ameen (39) were arrested by Kalasipalya police for the attempted murder of Varun Bhopala, a RSS worker who was returning after attending a pro-CAA event organised by the RSS and other pro-Hindu organisations.

During the questioning, the accused confessed to hatching a plot to murder pro-Hindu organisation leaders at the pro-CAA event by creating a chaotic situation. The arrested had pelted stones to scatter the crowd during the event in order to carry out their murder plot but failed in that attempt. Later when they saw Varun leaving the crowd, they followed him and assaulted him. They later fled the spot on their motor bikes.

The accused reportedly were targeting BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, and orator Chakravarthy Sulibele, it is gathered.

Bengaluru city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said that the SDPI activists were funded by their leaders to create a disturbance, kill Hindu organisation leaders. “A special team has been formed to conduct an in-depth probe about the SDPI activities and take necessary action,” he added.
