Bengal violence: Adhikari says such an atmosphere was created in 2001; CM slams BJP for circulating fake videos

New Delhi: Claiming that BJP was circulating fake videos, alleging post-poll violence in West Bengal on social media, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said she will perpetrators of violence will be dealt with firmly and law & order situation will be restored in the state.

Shortly after being sworn in as the chief minister for the third time, she said, “I will tackle the law and order from today and deal with these sternly.’

“Such incidents will not be tolerated. You all have done a lot during elections. Bengal is a place of unity,” she said.

Meanwhile, Banerjee’s protege-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari, who won the Nandigram Assembly seat said that such an atmosphere was created in 2001 when CPI(M) was making an exit.

“The situation is very serious. I have been in politics for a long time. Such an atmosphere was created in 2001 when CPI(M) was making an exit. At that time, Mamata Banerjee got 60 seats. There was political violence in some areas,” he was quoted speaking to ANI.

Reiterating BJP president JP Nadda’s views that widespread post-poll violence in West Bengal is reminiscent of the atrocities people had to face during the country’s Partition, Adhikari said that people of a particular community are being targeted. “This situation is akin to what transpired during Partition,” he added.

Social media has been abuzz with several videos allegedly of TMC workers unleashing violence against BJP workers and supporters.

The violence has claimed 11 lives and the saffron party has termed these political killings as ‘state-sponsored violence’.
