District administration warns of heatwave conditions in Dakshina Kannada; recommends precautions

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority has sounded a heatwave alert for the district from March to May this year. In a press release on March 11, Deputy Commissioner and chairperson of District Disaster Management Authority issued the warning.

According to the release, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned about potential heat wave conditions in the district due to intense sunshine and hot winds from March to the end of May. The District Disaster Management Authority in Dakshina Kannada District advocated for precautionary measures to safeguard public health against the looming threat of heat waves.

As temperatures are expected to soar, authorities advise the public to take proactive steps to mitigate potential health risks associated with prolonged sun exposure. Here are the dos and don’ts outlined by the District Disaster Management Authority:

Do’s:

  1. Use Umbrellas or Hats: When venturing outdoors, utilize umbrellas or wear cotton turbans and hats to shield against direct sunlight.
  2. Wear Light, Loose Clothing: Opt for light, loose-fitting cotton attire, preferably in white, to facilitate ventilation and comfort.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Maintain hydration by drinking plenty of water and fluids like buttermilk and glucose solutions (ORS).
  4. Minimize Outdoor Activities: Limit outdoor physical exertion, especially between 11 am to 4 pm, when the sun’s intensity is at its peak.
  5. Keep Cool: Seek refuge in cool, shaded areas whenever possible to avoid heat exhaustion or stroke.
  6. Take Cool Baths: Take cold water baths or showers to regulate body temperature and alleviate discomfort.
  7. Ensure hydration in children: Ensure regular intake of fluids, particularly for children below 5 years, who should be given water with a pinch of iodized salt every half hour.
  8. Drink lime juice: Combat vitamin C deficiency induced by sunlight by consuming lemon juice and jaggery as alternatives to sugar.

Don’ts:

  1. Overexertion: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours to prevent heat-related illnesses.
  2. Overuse of spices: Refrain from consuming overly spicy foods, as they can exacerbate dehydration.
  3. Don’t ignore symptoms: Recognize the signs of heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms persist.
