There is a well here, but it is useless because of salt water. A few dug up another 60 feet deep well which ultimately turned out ineffective. A few well have gone bone dry and if a bore well id dug, the available water is limited only for a year.

Areas facing problem

Janata Colony, Kalihitlu, Mank, Hebtarbailu, Nayakavadi and Kodapadi areas in Gujjadi village are facing water problems. The situation is so bad that all residents here have already started to depend on water tankers. With a total population of 6,042 people, there are only 190 water collections from the panchayat. Even though most of the houses have wells, they end up dry in the summers,

Tap water is available once in two days which is not enough. Besides, the water coming in the tap is very slow. If this water is filled in all the available utensils in the house, it will only last for a day, says Sujata Poojary, a resident of Kalihitlu.

Water in the well is useless

Raghu Poojary of Kalihitlu informs, “We have a well. But even though there is good water in it, it has been affected by salt water and cannot be least used for bathing or any other work. We are depending on the tap water provided by the panchayat and water tankers,” he says.

Manjunath from Mavinakatte says, “We do not have our own well. 10 buckets of water is provided through water tankers by the panchayat once in two days.”

16 trips in a day

Panchayat too is indulging in all ways to fulfill water requirement and tankers are running 16 trips every day. Tanker water is provided to 150-160 houses in a day. We start from 6 am in the morning and work till 9 pm in the night providing water to every single house, informs tanker driver Raju.

50 houses facing problem

“Gram Panchayat is putting in full efforts to fulfill the water requirements of the houses here. But it is not possible to accomplish as per the people’s expectation. Around 40-50 houses in Kalihitlu ward are facing water problem. If additional funds are received to tackle this problem in the coming days, a permanent solution needs to be found on the panchayat level,” says Harish Mesta, Gujjadi GP former president

Provide grant for bore well

“15 tanks of water is provided through water tankers. Even though the panchayat is trying its maximum, it is not possible to deliver as per expectation. Already a well is being dug through ZP funds. Since all the 5 wards are facing water problem, if funds are provided by taluk or zilla panchayat to dig a bore well per ward, it would be very useful. The presently existing bore well is devoid of water,” informs Tammayya Devadiga, President, Gujjadi GP

People’s demands

  • Increase the tap water amount
  • Water supply trough water tankers needs to be further increased
  • Provide time for water supply trough tankers
  • Permanent solution for water problem
