Mysuru: Amidst never ending disputes between states about the distribution of Cauvery water, activists fear if the river would even exist amidst the plethora of problems that are plaguing it. Karnataka convener of the Cauvery River Swachhtha Andolan M.N. Chandramohan expressed his fears about the existence of the river, which is the only source of water for many places in the Old Mysuru region.

He said that the water of the river at Talacauvery is fit for drinking and added that the Cauvery no longer joins the sea at its end. He blamed the tourists to Kodagu for the pollution and deterioration of the river. Illegal sand mining and unscientific developmental projects on the river banks have also affected it adversely. He accused the State Government of not taking any steps to save the Cauvery and also condemned all political parties for not taking up the Cauvery issue in any of their campaigns.

He also took digs at film stars trying to gain publicity by superficially addressing the Cauvery issue. Personalities from the field of films or politics, are not taking any measures to revive the river. He urged the need for a specific legislation in order to settle the dispute over the Cauvery and requested the State Government to represent it at the Centre. He felt that the Central Government, which was launching campaigns to clean up the river Ganga, should also take similar measures for the Cauvery.

He announced a rally to be undertaken on the World Environment Day of June 5, from Mysuru to Srirangaparna to create awareness about the Cauvery and its conservation.
