CNE on World Diabetes Day at WGSHA

Manipal: M.Sc. Dietetics and Applied Nutrition, Department of Allied Hospitality Studies, Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA), MAHE, Manipal conducted a one-day CNE on “An Interprofessional Approach to Diabetes Care – Every Family’s Concern”, on November 14 at Dr TMA Pai Auditorium here.

Principal WGSHA, Chef K Thiru, welcomed the gathering and Mrs Meenakshi Garg, HOD, MSc DAN & Organizing Chairperson, gave an overview of the CNE. Chief Guest, Dr PLNG Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Quality Assurance), MAHE, Manipal emphasised in his inaugural address that Diabetes incidence is increasing steadily and prevention & management should be done by an Interprofessional team.

A panel of speakers shared their views on how to manage Diabetes comprehensively and holistically. Dr Meenakshi Bajaj stressed on the need for “Improving nutrition in women with Diabetes Mellitus”; Dr SudhaVidyasagar elaborated on the “Detection and management of complications of Diabetes”; Dr S Shobana discussed about “How healthy are our Cereals and Millets for the risk of chronic disease”.

Ms Shona Prabhu highlighted the “Benefits of Nutrition and Importance of Leading a Healthy Lifestyle” and “Role of exercise in the management of Diabetes” was emphasized upon by Dr Bhamini Krishna Rao. The delegates participated very enthusiastically in the poster and quiz competitions organized as a part of the CNE.

The key take-home message from the day’s deliberations was that prevention is paramount, screening for diabetes and its complication is mandatory and no symptoms should be ignored. Include lots of whole grains, prebiotics, reduce total fat intake, increase physical activity, relax and get a good sleep, stay well hydrated, refrain from smoking and alcohol.
