It was by God’s will that Bhishma stood up for the Kauravas and fought in the war; otherwise, Duryodhana might not have come to the battlefield. This should not be interpreted as war always being justified. The central theme of Dharma is that everyone should act according to the will of the master of the world. For instance, intelligence officials perform their duties in other countries on behalf of their nation because the head of the country desires it. That is the official’s Dharma.
It is a mistake to make decisions about Dharma without considering God. How can we know God’s will? The Dharmashastras teach that the way to understand this is through constant observation (meditation) on what the Lord’s will is.
