Mangaluru: Karnataka Rajyotsava, typically a day of celebration, took on a somber tone as numerous organizations rallied to demand official recognition for the Tulu language. A tweet campaign that spanned from dawn till dusk on Twitter saw thousands of individuals voice their support for granting Tulu language its rightful status.

Prominent organizations in the coastal region have been persistently advocating for many years, asserting that the Tulu language should be declared the state’s official language and incorporated into the eighth article of the constitution. Regrettably, the dream remains unfulfilled, despite their persistent efforts.

The primary obstacle to this recognition appears to be the lack of political will. Many concerned citizens and activists have taken to Twitter to urge various elected representatives, including the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Members of Parliament (MPs), and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), to actively participate in advancing this cause.

During the BJP government’s tenure, a committee was formed with the specific aim of designating Tulu as the state’s second official language. However, the report produced by this committee has remained undisclosed. While a comprehensive report has already been submitted to the state government, it remains in obscurity, largely overshadowed by the pressing matters surrounding elections.
