Geethartha Chinthane 47: Nishkaama Karma even after Aparokshajnana

Salvation is assured only after Aparokshajnana (direct realization of the Self). This realization comes from the foundation of devotion. Before Aparokshajnana, there is often a question—’Does God exist or not?’ But after Aparokshajnana, there is no room for doubt. However, due to the power of habit, the practitioner retains devotion.

Moksha is achieved only when there is devotion, even after gaining Aparokshajnana. The Pandavas, despite having all the qualifications for Moksha, still performed sravanadi karmas (rituals like listening to scriptures).

There are three categories of beings who attain Moksha. Humans are the lowest, followed by Rishis (sages), and then Devata Ganas (divine beings), who are considered superior. For Rishis, their status is earned through penance, while for humans and Devatas, their existence is due to their Jivaswabhava. The position of Rishis is attained through rigorous spiritual practice.

Among Rishis, there are different categories such as Brahmarishi, Devarishi, and Rajarshi. Similarly, there are different types of Devatas. Even after attaining Brahmadarshan (vision of Brahman), the Devatas do not abandon sravanadi karmas. This is done for the sake of greater bliss.

Before the creation of the universe, only God existed—”Eko Narayanah, Na Brahma Na Cha Shankarah“—meaning only Narayana existed, not Brahma or Shiva. The Lord, who appeared first, created the universe and then began creating living beings within it.
