Goof-up? No. of supplementary pgs used, erroneously mentioned as 'marks' in SSLC result

 

Mangaluru: In a shocking case, an SSLC student from Dakshina Kannada who had passed Science examination was perceived as failed after her result wrongly mentioned the number of supplements used by her for writing the paper.

Notably, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Suresh Kumar had advised evaluators to show leniency while assessing the exam papers considering the Covid-19 crisis. However several students from the twin districts, who secured marks below their expectations have applied for revaluation.

The assessment of papers from here was done at other districts. It is being expressed that the evaluation has been done strictly causing disappointment to the students.

Speaking to Udayavani, a teacher from Dakshina Kannada district said that this time round the number of students who have applied for revaluation of their papers especially Science, Maths, Social Sciences and English subjects is far more than that in previous years.

Test papers of students belonging to other districts were assessed in Dakshina Kannada, and the teachers have assessed the papers leniently in some cases even giving 8-10 grace marks to pass a student. One of the teachers said that they are aware of the pressure that the students might have faced while appearing for exams during this crisis. Students’ future depends on the results, we took this in consideration, he said.

A student has to pay Rs 405 to obtain a photocopy of his answer paper and thereafter if they want to apply for revaluation they must pay Rs 810. In order to get a refund of this money, the student must obtain more than 6 marks during revaluation. In case they want to apply for a supplementary exam, they must further pay a sum of Rs 300. This money is non-refundable. This has created anxiety among parents and students likewise, who opine that they have to bear unnecessary costs for others’ mistakes.

Likewise in Udupi district too, cases of students who have scored well in all subjects but with just pass marks in sociology and science have emerged. The issue has been brought to the notice of authorities, said Udupi DDPI to Udayavani.

In one of the cases of revaluation, it is observed that the marks allotted to a student in Science subject was in fact the number of supplements used for writing the paper. The student had scored 36 marks but the marks that was published in the results was 17.

Another student who scored above 70 in all subjects has shockingly got 19 marks in science. He too has applied for revaluation.

Yet another student who was above 75 marks in English, Science and Math has scored around 60 marks. The assessors have deducted marks for grammatical mistakes.
