This project which costs Rs. 149 crore will bring all the services and systems including transport, waste management, street lamp, air pollution measurement, traffic control and many others under one roof. The tender process for the first phase work costing Rs. 39 crore is ongoing. This centre will be created on the 3rd floor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) building comprising 2,500 sq.ft. of space. World class technology and equipment will be installed here. All the various systems will be linked with the centre from where everything will be watched and directions will be given..
Functions
The close to 66,000 street lamps in the city will come under this centre and their lighting up and switching off will be connected to the centre. The brightness of the lamps can be manipulated and electricity can be saved by lighting up only the number of lights required.

Watch on water distribution
The centre will also keep watch on the water distribution system. It will keep watch on the amount of water arriving at Thumbay water purification unit, on how much water has been sent to the water tanks at Padil and Bendore, on if water is leaking or being stolen and other things will be known accurately. Even the billing system will be integrated with this and initially implemented on an experimental basis at a few wards.
GPS will be installed on all waste collection vehicles and their movement as well as waste collection will be under watch and important information will also be provided. A plan is being designed to bring all the various systems under the ‘Central Command Centre’.
Revolutionary system
This is a revolutionary system and is cooperative to provide quick and standard service. It will be possible to keep watch on most of the services of MCC and hence also deliver them effectively said Naveen D’souza, president of health and education statistics committee.
Smart parking
Smart parking will be connected with the command centre. Vehicle owners need to download an app. which is being designed to realize this. Through it, information on parking space availability can be availed by its user.
Tender process
“The ‘Central Command Centre’ is the most important part of the Smart City project and the technical bid for its creation has been done and currently the tender process is ongoing. The total expense of this project is Rs. 149 crore. The first phase is getting installed at the cost of Rs. 39 crore,” informed Mohammed Nazeer, MCC commissioner.
