The road is a critical link connecting Karkala to Udupi, Manipal, and Hiriyadka, catering to thousands of daily commuters, including students and professionals. However, the severely damaged road has posed challenges for years. Road repair works, though delayed, have now gained momentum, raising hopes for better connectivity. Local residents have urged the authorities to ensure timely completion and provide a well-maintained road for smooth travel.

Dusty Roads Amid Construction

Ongoing roadworks, including soil excavation, leveling, and cement application, have left the area covered in dust. Despite efforts to sprinkle water from tankers, the dust remains a persistent issue. Locals and commuters have called on the authorities and contractors to intensify dust-control measures by sprinkling water more frequently.

The stretch from Hiriyadka Kotnakatte to Kudi Cross, via Bhajanakatte, is undergoing significant repairs. MLA Gopal Suresh Shetty has facilitated Rs 10 crore in funding from the government for road development. The work includes creating proper drainage systems with pipelines for rainwater management. Heavy machinery, including JCBs, is being used for excavation and other construction activities.

Focus on Dust Mitigation

MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty emphasized that roadworks on the Karkala-Hiriyadka stretch are progressing at a steady pace. Instructions have been issued to complete the project without delay and ensure smooth travel. To address the dust problem, contractors and officials have been directed to sprinkle water regularly using tankers, he added.

Health Concerns Rise Due to Dust

The dusty roads have heightened health risks, particularly for two-wheeler riders, bus commuters, and those traveling in open vehicles. Medical experts advise commuters to cover their faces with masks or cloth to protect against respiratory and skin-related health issues caused by prolonged dust exposure. Frequent dust inhalation can lead to lung and skin problems, making caution essential during travel in the area.
